While in Poland kebabs are popular, in Greece gyropites are a specialty. The Greek sandwich is famous for its typical bread roll – drunken bread. Inside it there are fresh vegetables, meat, fries and very popular tzatziki sauce. Recently we have had a chance to try this dish and we liked it very much, so we decided to find a recipe and present it to you in our blog.

Recipe for pitas


  • 2.5 dkg of yeast,
  • 1 glass of hot water,
  • 0.5 small spoonful of sugar,
  • 2-3 glasses of flour,
  • 1 small spoonful of salt,
  • 2-3 spoons of oil.


Mix the yeast, sugar and water and set aside for 10 minutes in a warm place. Then pour the rest of the ingredients into the bowl and pour the ready mixture of yeast into them. Mix until the ingredients combine. Place the mixture dough on a flour-filled board and knead with your hands for 7-10 minutes. Put the kneaded mass into the bowl greased with oil for 1.5-2 hours to rise.

After this time, place the dough on the dough board and knead gently, start forming balls the size of a medium potato, then roll them out into cakes about 1 cm thick and leave for 30 minutes to rise. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees C and place the previously prepared cakes on a tray. Bake for 8-10 minutes.

2.A few words about tzatziki.


  • 200 g of Greek yoghurt,
  • 2-3 smaller ground cucumbers,
  • Spoon of olive oil,
  • Garlic clove,
  • A pinch of salt,
  • Chopped herbs (at your discretion).


Peel cucumbers and chop finely. We do the same with the garlic. Put the prepared ingredients into the bowl with yoghurt and add salt. Mix the whole things and liquefy with oil. Add selected herbs – dill, parsley or oregano – then stir again and the sauce is ready.

It is worth mentioning that in Greek pubs meat is usually baked after being staked. At home, we can dice the meat, sprinkle it with gyros spice and fry it in oil. 

Then we take the vegetables. Cabbage, tomatoes and cucumbers are cut into cubes and corn is prepared.

Cut the pita breads from one side, put meat, sauce and salad inside. Repeat the process and it is done. Enjoy!
